The Yorkshire Budgerigar Society Beginner Novice Day.
A Beginner Novice Day was held by the Yorkshire Budgerigar Society, and it was open to all sections of the hobby to attend, also to none members of the Y.B.S., which resulted in a good turn out of fanciers, over fifty attended the full day of events.
It started with booking in of members budgies for a small show, with fanciers from all sections taking part, Geoff Tuplin judged the birds, while Philip Reaney gave a D.V.D. presentation on varieties what a beginner or novice may like to take up, he also covered most varieties even down to the rares, explaining the correct markings colour of each variety, he also explained the colour of feet in some of the varieties, and he went on to say the colour of feet and beak and cheek patches will tell one what variety it is, there were birds of all varieties on display for them to look at and discus with senior members present.
Jeff Attwood was the guest speaker, and he gave a slide show and talk on care and management, and also showed slides taken of birds he keeps such as the melanistic spangle and frosted Pieds, he then showed members the lovely Australian Clear Wings, that he had photographed while in Australia, which are almost devoid of wing markings, although the birds were not of a high exhibition standard, they looked marvellous on the screen, showing a flight full of these lovely clear, clearwings, of all colours.
After lunch, there were panels on question and answers, on buying initial stock, for members just starting up, such as where to buy from, and what to look for, another panel formed to take questions on, from hatching to weaning, a lively discussion took place, and the panel told members how to deal with the many problems that crop up during a breeding season, such as moving eggs for all kind of reasons, moving chicks, after being attacked, or some other reason, dealing with none feeding hens, feeding chicks by the way of a crop needle, and a host of many other set backs one comes across at breeding time.
Fred Kennedy the Y.B.S. president, who was the main organiser of the day and had put in many hours of work, along with his committee, thanked Jeff Attwood for coming all the way from Devon, along with the members present for coming to the event, and everyone went home happy, after enjoying a wonderful day.
